GSK Consumer temporarily halts Andhra operations
Saturday December 12 2009

GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare on Friday said it has temporarily suspended its operations in Andhra Pradesh, including shutting down a plant that makes its flagship drink Horlicks, due to the ongoing political unrest in the state.

GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare (GSKCH) said its management is reviewing the situation in AP, which is facing political unrest after the Centre agreed to create a separate Telangana state, and the temporary closure is unlikely to have much impact on it business.

"Like every industry we are prepared for such situations. It would not have much impact as the factory will be closed for a short period of time. We are only worried about the assets and people there," GSKCH Executive Vice-President Legal and Company Secretary Surinder Kumar said.

The firm's factory, located at Industrial Estate Dowlaiswaram in the state, produces a host of products from the company's portfolio and mainly health drink, Horlicks.

Kumar said the company employs around 800 people in the plant but did not specify for how long the operations in the state would be put on temporary suspension.

Besides Andhra Pradesh, GSKCH has three other factories, two in Punjab and one in Haryana. The company sells health drinks like Boost and Viva in India besides over-the-counter medicines like Crocin, Eno and Iodex.
